Story
The story
Nora Johnson is dead, but no one in her family has noticed. Her body lies curled in a corner of the street while her parents sit at home with the two girls they adopted, Phoebe Johnson and Lydia Johnson, feeding them fruit and laughing. Ten years ago her sister Esme Johnson died in a car accident, and since then her parents have blamed Nora for living, filling the house with a hatred she could never escape.
After Esme's death, her parents searched adoption websites for girls who resembled their lost daughter, and brought Phoebe and Lydia home. The two sisters learned the rules of the house quickly, imitating Esme's sweetness while turning their new parents further against Nora. She is beaten, starved, locked in the storage room to kneel, and made to clean up after them, all while they call her the one who should have died.
Now a ghost, Nora drifts through the window and watches the family she left behind, still invisible to them even in death.
Opening excerpt
I'm no longer alive.
But no one has noticed.
My body is curled up in a corner of the street.
My family probably thinks I'm just throwing another fit, hiding away on purpose.
But this time, it's different.
I'm truly gone.
My sisters, Phoebe Johnson and Lydia Johnson, are watching TV with Mom and Dad. The coffee table is filled with sliced fruit, and Mom is gently feeding them strawberries.
How idyllic.
If I weren't already a ghost, I might have thought this family was happy too.
I drift outside the window.
