Story

The story

Lexi Lin is the most hated celebrity on the internet, and on her birthday she dies of a heart attack in her bathroom. Her soul floats free, unseen, as her best friend Samantha pries open her eyelids to unlock her phone, drains her $1.2 million into an account called Sam's Studio, and posts a tearful tribute beside a photo of the corpse.

At the memorial, Samantha plays the grieving sister, promising Lexi's fortune to charity while reporters film her. Then Lexi's estranged brother Luke bursts in, the gambler she blocked before dying. He kneels at her coffin and demands to know where the imported medicine he gave Samantha went.

Luke scatters receipts for a heart valve repair agent he paid for by selling the old house. Lexi watches, realizing the brother she despised tried to save her, while the friend she trusted swapped the medicine for vitamins. As Samantha has Luke thrown out, Lexi can only watch the truth surface.

Opening excerpt

I was the most hated female celebrity on the internet. Even drinking water could get me cursed onto the trending list.

On my birthday, I died in the bathroom.

The first person to find my body was my best friend.

She didn't cry, nor did she call 911.

The first thing she did was pry open my eyelids and bring my phone close.

Ding.
