Story
The story
Clara's six-year-old son Leo has inherited his father Julian's gift for languages, and the two of them chat in foreign tongues right in front of her. At the mall, Leo points at her belly and jokes in German, Julian answers in French, and Leo mocks her in Italian. Clara says nothing and buys the largest suitcase in the store.
Julian is a male chauvinist who controls every choice in the household, and Leo, encouraged by his father, has learned to despise her. She has tried to learn their languages and failed, and now she is treated as a maid. When she finally asks for a divorce, Julian and his friends laugh and remind her that everything she owns came from him.
Still, Clara has said what she needed to say, and she stands up to leave.

At just six years old, he was already fluent in eight languages.
He and his father would often chat in foreign languages right in front of me.
Today, while we were walking through the mall, my son pointed at my stomach and said in German,
"Mama, der Bauch ist groß."
(Mom’s belly is so big.)
My husband smiled and replied in French,
"On peut mettre un cochon."
(We could fit a pig inside.)
My son doubled over laughing, mocking me in Italian,
"La mamma è un maiale."
(Mom is a pig anyway.)
I turned to ask them what they were saying, but on second thought, I decided not to.
