Story

The story

As the only daughter of oil magnate Mr. Hayes, Willow has been groomed for a gala where her father will name both her fiancé and his successor from among Jax, Caleb and Aiden — the sons of three subsidiary heads, raised at the Hayes estate for over a decade. Days before the announcement, she finds them at the private club: Jax with an exotic dancer, Caleb with a staff member, and Aiden, the one she favored, kissing Skylar, her best friend, while the three mock her.

That night she tells her father she will marry Liam Sterling, son of the Sterling Oil baron, rumored to be less than whole and likely barren. Her father questions her happiness, but respects her choice. Outside the study, the three men confront her, and Aiden warns he may publicly reject her at the gala.

When Skylar feigns innocence, Willow slaps her, and Jax, Caleb and Aiden turn on her, demanding an apology. Willow sees their hypocrisy: they refuse her yet cling to their places as candidates for the Hayes fortune.

Opening excerpt

But three days before the gala, I stumbled upon the three of them at our exclusive private club. Jax was grinding wildly with an exotic dancer on the dance floor, his movements crude. Caleb was sprawled on a sofa, shamelessly entangled with a catering staff member. And Aiden, the one I’d harbored a quiet affection for, was locked in a passionate, breathless kiss with Skylar, my supposed best friend.
