Story

The story

For seven years, Clara banked her own rare chimeric blood, vial by agonizing vial, against the high-risk pregnancy her doctors warned could kill her. Then her husband, Dr. Nate Brooks, quietly authorized that entire reserve for Lily, the daughter of his childhood friend Elena Foster, without ever asking Clara's consent.

When Clara learns what he has done, she schedules a termination of the twins she is carrying. Nate, absorbed in Lily's recovery, treats her grief as a scene and invites Elena and Lily to move into their home for months, just before the couple's wedding.

Stripped of the blood that was her only lifeline and told to be friendlier to the woman who took it, Clara must decide what remains of a marriage built on a promise he has already broken.

Nate Brooks took the emergency blood supply I had been stockpiling for seven years and authorized its use for his childhood friend’s daughter.

His colleagues tried desperately to talk him out of it:

"But what about Clara?"

"She has a complex chimeric blood type. Carrying a pregnancy is extremely high-risk for her. If she hemorrhages without backup blood, it's an absolute death sentence."

Nate was silent for a long time before replying softly.
