Story

The story

At the Metro Emergency Dispatch Center's live Dispatcher of the Year broadcast, Luke boasts of eight flawless years and absolute rationality. He tells the cameras that three nights ago, during a torrential storm, his ex-girlfriend Grace called the dispatch line 143 times, pretending her car was trapped under a flooded overpass to block his engagement to Melanie. He blacklisted her number on the spot, and the comment section praised his dedication.

Then forensic pathologist Audrey breaks onto the broadcast: Grace is dead, drowned in her car after six hours, her hand still clutching the phone showing those 143 blocked calls. Luke dismisses it as a fake-death stunt, refusing to identify her body at the county morgue. Only Grace, watching from above, knows the truth of the million dollars and the sacrifice he never learned.

As the backlash grows and a photo arrives that looks exactly like Grace, Luke's certainty begins to crack.

Opening excerpt

The Metro Emergency Dispatch Center was hosting its live broadcast for the annual Dispatcher of the Year award.

The host turned to Luke, asking for the secret behind his flawless eight-year record of zero dispatch errors.

Facing the cameras, Luke spoke with calm, absolute composure.

"Maintaining absolute rationality. I never let personal emotions compromise emergency resources."

The host seized the opportunity to follow up. "Have you ever encountered any absurd calls where people tried to maliciously block the emergency channel?"

Luke’s eyes instantly turned cold.
