Our Love Story, Another Woman's Baby

Ethan has turned his love story with Serena into a film, released on twelve thousand screens nationwide. But the female lead, and the title of wife, belong to Violet, a young woman five months pregnant who wears the emerald ring his mother Victoria kept for twenty years.

Serena flies home from Africa for their fifth anniversary and slips into the last row of the premiere. On screen she watches her own first meeting, her first date, her twenty-third birthday recreated scene by scene. Then Ethan kneels on stage and proposes to Violet, dedicating the film to the love of his life. When Serena finally faces him, he calls her an old employee, drags her to a dark parking level and pushes a confidentiality agreement across the seat: eighteen months of silence, ten million dollars if she breaks it.

She looks at the contract, then at the man she married, and asks for a divorce.
