On the anniversary of their marriage, Jenna Dorsey boards a yacht with her son Oliver and her husband Franklin, a lifeguard. When the vessel strikes a reef and sinks, Franklin pulls Oliver to safety, then swims past Jenna to rescue his childhood sweetheart, Myrna Haynes, leaving his pregnant wife to drown. Oliver watches her struggle without a flicker of warmth, and when the Deputy Captain, Noble Compton, spots her, Franklin dismisses her as a jealous pretender who can swim well enough to save herself.

Jenna remembers another life: she once called Franklin's name and survived, while Myrna drowned, and for that her husband and son dragged her onto the yacht, cut open her belly and drowned her. Reborn on the same day, she lets herself sink rather than beg, releasing the hands that shielded her unborn child as Franklin shields Myrna and Oliver reaches for them.
