Spilled Milk and Severed Ties

Groomed from childhood to become the perfect daughter-in-law for the Vance family, Lily married Harrison Vance at twenty and gave birth to Ethan at twenty-four. Every night she brought warm milk to father and son before bed, until the night Harrison knocked over his glass and Ethan secretly poured his down the sink. Harrison had come home late, and when Lily asked about the familiar perfume on him, he warned her she had crossed a line and told her to stop waiting up.

Lily hands Harrison divorce papers. He asks if she is ending the marriage over a glass of milk; she says yes. She gives up custody of Ethan, transferring the East Suburbs property to him instead of child support, and leaves New York for Charleston, blocking Harrison's number after one last call about his cufflinks. When Ethan's kindergarten teacher phones about his unfinished robotics project, Lily asks to be put on speaker.

In a circle that praised her as a wife custom-made for Harrison, Lily was called too perfect, too dull. The perfume she smelled was the gardenia scent worn by Victoria, Harrison's first love.
