Story
The story
When a storm traps Lucas Davies on his yacht, only Penny can handle the old fishing boat that can reach the reef. She steers into the tempest, hauls him from the water, and brings him back to shore. No one thanks her. Instead, Lucas throws his torn jacket at her feet and demands three thousand dollars for the damage. His father, Mr. Davies, backs him, and the villagers side with the developer who has promised to invest fifty million in North Reef Village. Penny pays, sells her father's boat, and prepares to leave the village behind.
But the same stretch of sea is not finished with the Davies family. When Lucas is in trouble again, Mr. Davies comes begging for Penny to save his son's life. The woman they made pay for a jacket now holds the only way to reach him.
Opening excerpt
Last year, the developer’s son insisted on taking his yacht out during storm season. Half an hour later, he was gone. The yacht was caught right in the eye of the storm. Professional rescue teams couldn’t even get close. Only I knew how to navigate that old fishing boat. I didn’t hesitate. I steered the boat straight into the tempest and pulled him back to shore.
