Story

The story

Every year on her birthday, Claire's boyfriend Justin abandons her at the last minute for his junior, Sienna. This year she waits three hours at the restaurant he chose, then eats her steak and cake alone, making a quiet wish: by next birthday, she won't need him anymore. When Justin finally arrives, she greets him with calm indifference and moves into the guest room.

Sienna soon moves into their apartment, wearing Justin's favorite shirt and claiming his evenings. Claire stops cooking breakfast for him, stops asking for movies, and starts browsing rental listings. Justin grows uneasy at her silence, insisting he sees Sienna only as a sister, while a colleague warns Claire she has seen him with another girl.

Claire no longer fights or cries. She simply lets go, one small distance at a time.

Opening excerpt

This year, I’d booked a restaurant, put on the dress he said he loved most, and waited for three hours.

Finally, I got a message from him: “Sienna’s heartbroken and feeling down. I’m just going to talk to her for a bit. You go ahead and eat.”

This time, I didn't beg or cry. I finished my steak alone and ordered myself a slice of cake.
