Story
The story
On her wedding day, Jean Henson refuses to walk down the aisle. She has one condition: her fiancé, Paddy Cobb, must apologize to her male assistant, Basil Chavez, in front of every guest. If Basil forgives him, she will marry him. If not, there is no wedding. Jean drops her veil into the trash can and calls the apology nonnegotiable.
Paddy makes the call himself and cancels the wedding. Jean is stunned; Basil begs him not to walk away from her. When Paddy refuses to apologize for a punch that bruised Basil's eye, Jean dials the police in front of him. He does not argue. On his wedding day, the police take him away, and he is sentenced to eight months.
Jean visits him in the detention room, telling him to use the time to reflect, and promises the wedding will go ahead once he is out. On the day of his release, she waits for him in a wedding dress, a bank card in hand. He refuses both, and tells her the wedding is off.
Opening excerpt
My fiancée Jean Henson—still in her wedding dress—refused to walk down the aisle. Because I wouldn't grovel to her male assistant, Basil Chavez.
"Jean, the guests are already here."
I frowned, reminding her to stop acting like a child.
She turned on me without warning.
She stared me down, cold as stone. "When you get on that stage, you're going to apologize to Basil in front of everyone. If he forgives you, I'll marry you."
My brows knotted together. "And if I don't?"
"Then there's no wedding."
