Story

The story

For eight years, Mina has watched her husband Aaron send money to his brother Mark — for a car, a shop, a house down payment, a renovation that is twelve thousand short. When her father, a sixty-one-year-old electrician, needs six thousand for surgery that cannot wait, Aaron tells her to have her brother pay half. Mina has no brother. Aaron has been married to her for eight years and does not know she is an only child.

He walks away, stepping over the hospital admission form. Mina's savings total 4,271.68. Her mother-in-law, Mrs. Davies, arrives to help with Lily and urges understanding: Mark's renovation is urgent, her father has insurance, she can borrow from relatives. Every message in her chat history with Aaron carries Mark's name; every reply of hers was one word.

At the sink, washing the seventh bowl, Mina feels the cold water on her hands and the cold in her heart.

I stood in the living room, gripping my father’s hospital admission form. Aaron sat on the sofa, not even looking up.
