Story
The story
Adrian Walker ends a three-year road trip at his mother's request to meet Sabrina Hartwell, the fiancée his late father arranged for him in childhood. At the address she sends, a members-only business club, a waiter turns him away and Sabrina's mocking voice comes through the phone: she is the future heiress of the Hartwell Family, and he is not worthy of her.
Inside, Sabrina's assistant Lucas sneers at Adrian's shabby clothes and leads him to her, where she and her friends taunt him as a poor loser. When Adrian says he will leave, Lucas trips him and pushes over an antique vase worth millions, then blames him for it. Sabrina backs the claim and offers to pay only if Adrian kneels and declares he is unworthy of her.
Adrian refuses to kneel, insisting he can pay but did not break the vase, and points out that the private room is monitored by surveillance.
Opening excerpt
Helplessness filled me as I ended my three-year road trip and made the decision to meet my fiancée.
After all, she was the one my father had arranged for me before he died. If she were suitable, I would follow his will.
But when I contacted her, instead of a warm welcome, all she sent was an address. I felt unease bloom in my chest.
I arrived at the address as scheduled and found it was a business club.
Before I even entered, I was stopped.
"Sir, this club is members-only. You are not allowed in!"
