Story

The story

On the day of her prenatal checkup, Sophia learns her husband Ethan Turner has booked her a post-miscarriage care package instead of a postpartum suite. He admits he has kept a college student, Nina, pregnant on the side, and wants Sophia to abort her own child and adopt Nina's, so she will not favor her own over his. He hands her the surgical consent form, promising she will always be Mrs. Turner.

Sophia wakes three days later to hear that Ethan forced the abortion of an eight-month fetus and had her uterus removed so she could never conceive again. Nina slaps her, and Ethan takes Nina's side, stripping Sophia of everything he gave her and turning her out penniless. Only Sophia knows the truth: Ethan is sterile, and she alone could bear his children.

Retrieving her old medical report, Sophia makes copies and sends them to Ethan's business rivals, a final gift before she leaves.

Opening excerpt

On the day of my prenatal checkup, I discovered that my husband had booked me a post-miscarriage care package instead of a postpartum recovery suite.

I was about to laugh it off as a mistake when he said flatly:

"I didn't get it wrong. Actually, there's something I need to come clean about."

"I've been keeping a college student on the side. She's pregnant, and I've already put her through enough. I can't let her child suffer too."
