Story
The story
Fresh from her third miscarriage, Michelle is brought by her husband Chester to Callie's historic cottage in Havenport, where the salt air is meant to help her heal. At the gate stands Callie, cradling a sleek black cat named Shadow — and when the cat scratches Michelle's hand, she suddenly hears its thoughts, voices that speak of Chester's devotion to Callie and of the babies Michelle has lost.
Chester's every gesture bends toward Callie: he steadies her, shields her from the rain, and dismisses Michelle's pain as sensitivity. Shadow's whispers reveal a life Chester has shared here, a broth meant for a woman who has just lost a child, and a divorce waiting to be signed once Callie's own child is safe.
Too weak to leave, Michelle keeps the bloodied cotton and the untasted broth, listening as the quiet mist of Havenport hides a betrayal she can no longer ignore.
Opening excerpt
On the day of my third miscarriage, my husband told me he was taking me to Callie's coastal cottage to recover.
He said the salt air and quiet tides of Havenport were perfect for healing. And like a fool, I believed him.
When we arrived, Callie was waiting at the gate of her historic shingle-style cottage, a sleek black cat cradled in her arms.
