Story

The story

Vanessa Sterling has spent ten years as a devoted wife and mother, hiding her identity as the daughter of Sterling International Bank to protect her husband Adrian Cole's pride. When a fever leaves her bedridden, she boils herself an egg — and her son Evan calls the police, accusing her of stealing from him. Adrian shows no concern, comparing her unfavorably to his secretary, Sophie Blake.

Humiliated and betrayed by the family she sacrificed everything for, Vanessa decides to stop caring. She packs her suitcase and tells Adrian she wants a divorce. He laughs, certain she is helpless and cannot survive without him.

But Vanessa has a secret her husband never knew, and a message from her father waiting on her phone.

I had a fever, so I boiled myself an egg.

I didn’t expect my son to come home and call the police.

“There’s a thief in our house,” he told them, dead serious. “She stole one of my eggs.”

The officers thought it was a joke.

Evan didn’t.

“Ms. Blake gave me those eggs. They’re imported. She stole from me, so she should be arrested.”
