Story

The story

Cassie has always believed she is the less-loved daughter, overshadowed by her sister Rebecca, whose engagement to the Harrison family is the centre of the household. While her mother Linda adjusts her bridesmaid dress, Cassie suddenly hears Linda's unspoken thoughts: the dress waistline will hide a surgical incision, and next week Cassie's kidney is to be harvested for Rebecca.

Eighteen years of careful upbringing were never love—she was a spare blood bag kept ready for Rebecca. Linda drugs her soup to drag her to the hospital, and Richard orders a physical and buys drugs off the black market. Cassie secretly spits out the soup, keeps a sample as evidence and hides a recording phone.

At midnight Linda and Richard unlock her door and find her apparently asleep. Cassie lies still, waiting, no longer their obedient daughter.

Opening excerpt

My mother Linda smiled warmly as she helped me try on my bridesmaid dress, telling me I was the most beautiful girl in the world.

But the next second, I heard her vicious calculations from the depths of her mind:

"The waistline of this dress is perfect—it'll cover the incision nicely. Next week, after we harvest her kidney for Rebecca, Rebecca can marry into the Harrison family in style.
