Story

The story

For seven years, Lucas has stood by Isabelle Cole, and for seven years she has refused him. Every proposal—ninety-nine of them—has been turned down with the same excuse: her childhood friend Ronald Shaw is unmarried, and she cannot break the promise they made as children to marry at the same time. On his thirtieth birthday, Lucas kneels among roses for his hundredth attempt, certain this time will be different. Isabelle throws the ring into the river and walks away without a backward glance.

Left behind in front of the friends he begged to witness his happiness, Lucas finally begins to see the shape of his life. Isabelle rushes to Ronald whenever he calls, yet calls Lucas dramatic for nursing his wounds. When she comes home the next morning expecting breakfast, he no longer waits up or pleads. An overseas training post opens at work—one he once refused for her sake.

We've been together for seven years. For the previous 99 proposals, she said her childhood friend isn't married yet, and she can't bring herself to break the promise they've made.
