Story
The story
The Blackwood patriarch has decreed that whoever first gives the family a male heir will inherit the entire dynasty. Pierce Blackwood, the sole heir, is devoted to Tinsley, who rejects motherhood outright, so he has sworn off every other woman. Watching from the sidelines is Mara, Tinsley's overlooked best friend, who decides to seize the fortune Tinsley keeps discarding.
Mara conceives Pierce's child and is taken to a private medical facility, where Pierce's father's assistant orders a prenatal paternity test. Catherine Blackwood then sets the terms: a girl means a house and a settlement, a boy means the child enters the family and Mara becomes the mother of the heir. She is warned to tell no one.
But Tinsley finds the pregnancy test and posts it publicly, dragging Mara into a party full of mockery and questions, while Catherine's warning hangs over her.
Opening excerpt
The patriarch of the Blackwood empire had issued a decree that sounded like something out of a medieval legend: the first person to provide the family with a male heir would be handed the keys to the entire dynasty.
Pierce Blackwood, the sole heir of the ninth generation, was the natural choice to fulfill this legacy. But Pierce was hopelessly in love with Tinsley, my so-called best friend, who was a fierce advocate for the child-free lifestyle. To prove his devotion to her, Pierce had sworn a vow of celibacy to any woman who wasn't her, and a vow of childlessness to her.
