Nora wakes at forty-five in the mountain air of Montana, standing outside the staff dorms on the day she is meant to sign a marriage license with David, the engineer she is set to marry. She remembers a life in which that signature bound her to a man who vanished for twenty years, chasing a woman named Rose, and returned only as Nora lay dying. This time she lies about blueprints and sends him on ahead, then climbs the ridge to Mrs. Adler's cabin to sit with hot cider and decide what to do with a second chance.

When she finally reaches the county office, she watches David help a fallen Rose to her feet and sees the same struck expression she once mistook for nothing. Rose's injury is slight, the office closes, and the license goes unsigned. On the ride back, Rose wraps her arms around David on his bike while the other engineers watch, and Nora pedals ahead in silence, wondering whether Rose remembers their first life too.
