At the dinner table.

I chatted enthusiastically with Mrs. Lee and Mr. Perry.

Mrs. Lee frequently instructed her son to serve me food.

"The tenderest piece goes to Hannah."

"Go on, don't just stand there. Get my good daughter another bowl of soup."

"Here, grab a slice of meat. Hannah likes the marbled kind."

By the end of the meal, I realized I had so many preferences I hadn't even known about.

I couldn't help but admire Mrs. Lee's keen observation skills.

As for her son?

He was practically a robot.

When Mrs. Lee pulled out the photo album after dinner to reminisce, I never would have guessed that the little chubby kid in the pictures had turned into the striking blonde guy sitting across from me.

In the photo, I was graduating from high school.

The chubby kid was Ethan Perry.

He had just finished middle school, and his parents were sending him abroad for school.

In my memory, Ethan was a small, pale, chubby boy, a head shorter than me, and usually quiet.

Even taking the photo was awkward. Mrs. Lee had to push him forward: "Ethan, hurry up and pose with your big sister."

Our two families had known each other for over ten years.

I heard his parents say that Ethan might not come back after finishing his studies.

I felt a little down and threw an arm around his shoulder.

Looking back at the frozen moment now, Ethan looked utterly helpless, his face full of embarrassment.

Just like now.

"Mom, why are you bringing out these pictures?"

Ethan complained, his expression sour.

His cheek looked bruised, slightly caved in.

He thought no one was looking, but his palm was pressed down on a photo.

I had already seen it.

It was a picture of him in diapers.

Tiny.

And very cute.

I couldn't help but chuckle.

He caught my eye, turned, and glared at me. "Stop staring."

"Stare one more time, and I'll take your eyes out."

His voice was slightly louder when he said this, causing Buddy to immediately start growling and mumbling insults.

"Who do you think you're talking to, you punk?"

"Dare to threaten my mom? You're asking for trouble. The dog is only three, but it has plenty of strength and tricks up its sleeve!"

Barking, he latched onto Ethan's pant leg.

Protecting the mother at all costs.

Little Belle whined, putting a paw on Buddy, trying to mediate: "Forget it, forget it. It's tough for everyone."

"Don't bite my daddy~"

Seeing Buddy wasn't letting go, I grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and scolded, "Buddy, apologize immediately!"

I deliberately emphasized my distaste for such aggressive behavior.

The next second, the man in front of me spoke first.

"I'm sorry."

I stared blankly at the man, who quickly turned his head away after speaking.

Wait, is this right?

I felt like a circuit breaker had tripped in my head.

Ethan sighed, knelt down, and rubbed Buddy's head. "I didn't mean to yell at your mom."

"But you did the right thing. Next time, your big brother will buy you treats, okay?"

Buddy bared his teeth, reminding him, "Not big brother, Uncle."

I looked in the mirror and saw the hair on top of my head had been ruffled into a garlic bulb shape.

I secretly barked low: "Mommy-Sauce, speak up for me! Speak up for me!"

I wanted to say something, extending my hand to signal Ethan to stand up, but he misinterpreted it as me wanting to pull him up and took my hand.

His palm was warm.

He didn't rush to stand.

Suddenly, he raised his beautiful eyes to look at me, his tone shifting. "I already apologized. What else do you want?"

I honestly didn't expect things to progress like this.

I was flustered, my cheeks burning.

My mouth was a mess of words. "No."

"I was just calling Buddy... I wasn't talking about you."

"I was just calling Buddy," he said, sounding a little wronged.

Forget it.

The more I explained, the messier it got.
