Story

The story

In her first life, Lina Scott raised her sister Stella's abandoned baby alone. When Stella returned years later with a wealthy man, she accused Lina of stealing her child, and Lina's son turned his back on her. Cast out by her parents and hounded by neighbours, Lina jumped from her apartment roof.

She wakes on the morning the back-alley clinic doctor, Evan White, pounds on her door with a newborn, claiming Lina abandoned it. This time she fights back, striking him with her slipper and calling the police, while neighbours like Mrs. Gable back her story. Cornered, Dr. White admits the baby belongs to Stella, producing a phone and a letter as proof.

As police take him to his clinic and her parents follow, Lina packs and moves into her company dormitory. Her mother calls, frantic over the baby, but Lina refuses to be trapped again.

Opening excerpt

The doctor used the address she left behind to find my family, leaving the baby with me.

My parents got on their knees and begged me to adopt him. Just like that, I, a single woman, began the arduous task of raising a child alone.

Years later, just as I’d finally raised him, my sister returned. On her arm was a rich businessman, a thick gold chain gleaming around his neck.
