Story

The story

For eight years, Denys Dickerson has run the Grandview Restaurant, the city's most luxurious dining spot. Every year, Austin James books the class reunion there, sending a hundred-dollar deposit and promising to settle the rest later. He never does. The tab has grown to nine hundred eighty thousand dollars, yet the class chat showers Austin with praise, calling him generous and mocking Denys as a broke freeloader who mooches a free meal.

Only Denys knows the truth: the food, the liquor, the grand private room—he has quietly paid for all of it. When Austin demands the biggest room and the top-tier menu once more, promising payment after the reunion, Denys agrees. Then he claims the deposit and gives his manager a quiet instruction.

The next day, the guests walk in expecting a lavish feast and find the table piled with instant noodles. Denys has finally decided to show them who really foots the bill.

Opening excerpt

"Denys Dickerson, tomorrow's reunion is still at your place. Bump the food up a tier from last year, and throw in a few more bottles of top-shelf liquor so we don't run dry. I already sent you the deposit."

This was the eighth time Austin James had thrown a reunion at my restaurant, and every single time he only paid a hundred-dollar deposit.

I couldn't help pointing it out.
