Story

The story

On a graduation trip, Alvin watches his childhood sweetheart Mabel photograph Ethan Jilbert again and again, while she tells Alvin he is simply hard to capture. When a passing photographer, Mabel Sutter, offers to shoot Alvin for free, the pictures turn out beautifully, and Alvin quietly changes his college application from Northfield to Portwell.

Mabel mocks the stranger's work and grows colder, while Ethan calls Alvin ungrateful. After Mabel posts nine photos of Ethan, Alvin decides he will no longer be part of her life. The next morning she still brings him aloe vera gel for his sunburn, but when Ethan mentions she applied his sunscreen, Alvin offers to pay her back and walks away.

Opening excerpt

On the third day of our graduation trip, my childhood sweetheart finally agreed to take pictures of me.

But after only a few minutes, she frowned in frustration and lowered her camera.

"Not a single one looks good."

A classmate looked confused.

"How is that possible? Every picture you take of Ethan turns out great."
