Story

The story

When Melanie Swanson moves into the eight-million-dollar full-floor apartment she bought as her wedding home, her fiance Raymond Henson arrives with Yvette Vance and her whole family and hands out every room to them. He asks Melanie to rough it in the attic for a couple of days, calling her the reasonable one. Upstairs, she quietly calls her agent to sell the apartment and requests a transfer to the Seaford branch office.

That night Raymond storms into the attic demanding the PIN for the spending card her mother loaded for her health, because Katherine and the others are waiting at the hotel for him to pay. When Melanie refuses, Yvette urges him to slap her, and the blow sends her off the plank bed, her forehead striking the wall.

Five years of devotion, a fiance who lets another woman look down on her under her own roof, and a mother's money treated as his own: Melanie has given Raymond his last chance.

Opening excerpt

The day I moved into the eight-million-dollar full-floor apartment, my fiance Raymond Henson showed up with Yvette Vance's whole family, six people, and moved them in.

He came marching into the living room with the luggage, glowing, and started handing out rooms in that loud, pleased-with-himself voice.

"Katherine, you take the biggest bedroom on the first floor. Best light in the place."

"Cecil Vance, you and Minnie take the guest room next to it. That one looks straight out at the lake. Great view."
