Story

The story

For five years, Carol loved Joe Smith and worked without pay at his family's vineyard, the Silver Claw Pack's estate. When she asks for a family of their own, he puts her off, convinced she only wants a share of the Smith fortune. One night he shoves her toward a hot stove in his rush to chase Emma, the adopted daughter his mother chose as his Luna, and Carol is burned badly enough to need a skin graft and a month in the hospital. Joe never visits.

Discharged, Carol returns to the vineyard to find her fingerprint stripped from the gate and Emma seated on Joe's lap, wearing his ring. Emma announces that Joe will marry her. Joe insists Emma is only his sister, but Carol places her resignation on his desk and walks away, telling her father, Alpha of the distant Blood Moon Pack, that she accepts her place as his successor. She promises to come home in eight days, on the fifth anniversary of her relationship with Joe.

Joe, who has always believed Carol cannot leave him, does not yet know who she truly is.
