Story

The story

Evelyn has spent six years playing the devoted wife to Arthur, a man who cannot forget his first love, Chloe. When Chloe divorces, Arthur's contempt for Evelyn sharpens, and he begs for a divorce. Evelyn refuses, though he does not know why: a system bound her to a mission to make him love her, and only three refusals will end it and send her home.

After Arthur's drunken confession and a photo of him asleep on Chloe's lap, Evelyn stages a jealous outburst, provoking the first divorce demand. Two remain. Then Arthur brings Chloe to live under their roof, and Evelyn agrees, knowing the friction will hasten the second.

As her husband's loyalty settles entirely with another woman, Evelyn quietly finishes the graphic novel she means to carry back to her own world.

Opening excerpt

He spilled his true feelings in a private VIP room at a club, drunk out of his mind. "I've loved her for years. I was too late to confess before, and she got married. Now she's divorced, but I'm the one who's married."

I didn't get angry. I just stayed by his side.

My husband despised me. He thought I was a pathetic, clingy woman with no sense of self, an obstacle standing between him and his first love. He was desperate to divorce me.

Every time he brought it up, I refused.
