Story

The story

When five-year-old Annie is struck by a hit-and-run driver on her birthday, her mother Sarah rushes her to City General and signs the critical-condition forms alone. She calls her husband Ethan again and again, but he refuses to believe her, accusing her of lying to get his attention and hanging up to attend a company party.

Ethan is a model whose career Sarah quietly built from nothing, and his old flame Chloe has returned to the country. While Annie fights for her life in surgery, Chloe posts a photo of her freshly manicured nails, and in the window's reflection Sarah sees Ethan's hand, still wearing the watch she gave him. His only messages are cold accusations that she is teaching their daughter to lie.

As the doctor delivers the worst news and Annie asks for her father, Sarah discovers Ethan has blocked her number, leaving her no choice but to call the other woman.

Opening excerpt

The day of Annie's accident, Ethan was with his old flame getting her nails done.

I called him, begging him to come to the hospital, to see our daughter one last time.

But Ethan just accused me of being cruel, of cursing our own daughter.

I pleaded again and again, but he wouldn't budge.

Meanwhile, his old flame was posting on her Instagram story, showing off her new manicure.

"This goofball sat here like a statue waiting for me for three hours. He said he likes pink nails on me, what do you guys think? Cute?"

I stared at my phone for a long time, suddenly exhausted.
