Story

The story

After five years on a brutal mining deployment in the Mojave, Margo returns home expecting Christopher to keep the promise he made before she left. Instead, he admits he engineered her transfer to clear the way for Lily, who was pregnant with his child. At her old apartment, Lily now lives with their toddler, and Margo's belongings are gone.

At headquarters, Margo learns her three major tech projects list Lily as lead architect, and her own signature sits on an IP-sharing agreement she has no memory of signing. Her position is gone, and Lily is now department head, married to the CEO. Christopher calls only to ask her to stay away, and a clinic visit confirms her chances of conceiving naturally are practically zero.

With nothing left, Margo must decide how to face the company gala she planned to avoid.

Opening excerpt

Stepping out of the terminal after a brutal five-year stint out of state, my chest hummed with a foolish kind of hope. I thought Christopher would finally drop to one knee and keep the promise he made before I left.

Instead, he stood by the baggage claim with his hands in his pockets. His face was a mask of absolute indifference.

"Margo. I'm sorry."

Before the shock could even register, he kept talking.

"That transfer order. I was the one who pulled the strings."
