Story
The story
Keira has three days left to live. The painkiller she swallows hides her illness, but it cannot hide the truth: her parents dote on Lily Ashton, the girl they treat as a daughter, while they accuse Keira of faking her sickness and stealing Lily's place in a chemo trial. Tired of fighting, Keira signs her company and shops over to Lily, and her parents finally smile at her.
That evening, her husband Lucas and their daughter Chloe are cooking Lily's favourite dish. Lucas asks for a divorce so he can marry Lily and lift her spirits; Chloe urges her mother to understand. Keira agrees and signs, giving Lily her entire estate. Her family calls it maturity, but when Keira collapses and wakes to their disappointment, she understands the drug's brutal cost.
At the hospital, Keira offers Lily everything she owns. Then a strange tickle in her nose leaves her fingers stained with blood.
Opening excerpt
1
The doctor’s eyes were filled with pity as I swallowed the painkiller.
Three days left to live.
After taking the pill, I walked to Lily Ashton’s room. Inside, my father was peeling an orange for her while my mother chatted at her bedside. The moment I walked in, the warm smiles on their faces froze, replaced by a chilling indifference.
“What, done faking your little act and ready to cause more trouble for Lily?” my father’s voice was like ice.
