Story

The story

Locked in the underground wine cellar by her older brother Callum Lovelace, Caroline Lovelace is accused of stealing their adopted sister Cecilia's lost diamond bracelet. Caroline suffers from severe claustrophobia and heart failure, and as the iron door seals shut, her chest tightens. She pounds on the door until her nails split, but Callum dismisses her terror as an act, and Cecilia's pleas to let her out are ignored. Alone in the cold, Caroline's heart stops.

Her ghost rises to hover behind Callum in the surveillance room, watching him wait for her to beg for mercy. When he finally opens the cellar, he kicks her stiff body and drags her out by the collar, still certain she is playing dead. At the marble steps, he releases her, and her corpse tumbles, blood soaking the white carpet. He steps over her without a glance, locking the basement door behind him.

Upstairs, a dinner celebrates Cecilia's ballet gold medal. The butler Edmund Miller asks whether Caroline, with her heart condition, should be given a coat in the unheated basement.

Opening excerpt

I have severe claustrophobia and heart failure. The moment the iron door clicks shut and locks from the outside, my chest tightens.

I throw myself against the door and pound on it frantically. My fingernails scrape against the metal, producing an ear-splitting screech.

Cecilia's plaintive voice crackles through the surveillance intercom in the corner. "Forget it, Callum. I won't look for my bracelet anymore.
