Story
The story
A wife returns a day early from a week-long business trip to a silent house. Her six-year-old son Toby sits alone on the living room floor, drawing beside a stack of packaged sandwich bread, most of it already past its three-day shelf life. He has eaten nothing else since she left. Then a social media post from her husband's secretary, Amber, shows Zack cooking an intimate candlelit dinner for her, praising her figure and thanking him for a week of care.
Opening excerpt
Stacked on the small table next to him were several loaves of packaged sandwich bread.
I frowned, stepping forward. When Toby looked up and saw me, his face lit up with pure joy.
"Mom! You’re home!"
I pulled him into a tight embrace, then reached over to check the bread on the table. The receipt stuck to the bag showed they had all been bought the day after I left. Most commercial sandwich bread only has a shelf life of three days.
