Story
The story
Three months pregnant, Carrie Pruitt has left her job at the bank to keep a home for her husband, Thomas James. Yet Thomas's thoughts keep drifting to Marina Henson, the dazzling friend who surfs, skydives and travels the world. When Marina returns from Antarctica, Thomas asks his pregnant wife to cook a welcome dinner for her, even as the smell of oil sends Carrie rushing to the bathroom.
At the table, Thomas and Marina trade talk of markets and funding, while Carrie is told she need only look after the baby. Then, at a prenatal checkup, the doctor stops: the fetus's brain tissue has not developed properly, and the baby would not survive after birth.
