Story

The story

Nora has spent years trying to earn her family's love, but her husband Dr. Julian Vance, her brother Leo and her mother always put Ivy first. When Ivy pushes Nora down the stairs on her wedding anniversary, Julian stitches her wound carelessly and rushes back to Ivy's side. No one comes to collect Nora from the hospital.

A System offers Nora a way home: if one person chooses her over Ivy just once, she may stay in this world forever. She has tried everything to please them, yet no one comes. The System warns that in seven days her stitches will rupture and she will bleed to death from the injuries Ivy caused.

As her family gathers around Ivy at breakfast, Nora wonders what Julian's face will look like when he learns that his own brilliant hands have killed her.

I was being brought back to the family home, and the girl who had taken my place was dying.

My parents never left her side. My brother blamed me for coming back and upsetting her. My husband was her doctor, and even in the middle of our cold, mechanical lovemaking, he would leave at the sound of her voice.
