The story

In Port Royale, Eleanor has quietly kept Steve as her paid companion for two years, amused by his beauty and his fall from the Patton family after the true heir, Evan Patton, returned. When Steve abruptly ends things to take up with the young heiress Iris Vance, Eleanor feels only relief: her mother has just told her the Patton family wants her to marry Evan, the true heir.

At dinner, Iris lectures Eleanor about Steve's rightful place and warns her not to cling to him. Eleanor, whose Thorne family standing is unknown to them, dismisses the girl politely and lets Steve walk away without a scene, sparing herself the severance she had expected to pay.

Yet Eleanor has never met Evan, and her mother's calm remark that he is no less impressive than her previous acquaintance hints that her secrets were never truly hidden.

Steve was the imposter.

After the true heir’s return, he was cast out, left destitute and disgraced. It was then that he and I began our clandestine affair.

I, touched by his plight, offered him considerable care and support. Who would have thought that as soon as he found his footing in Port Royale, he would sever ties with me, clinging instead to the wealthy heiress?
