Story

The story

For six years, Fred has run a grilled fish restaurant in Millennium Square, building it from an empty mall with only three tenants into one of the city's most viral dining spots. Now, whenever his queue grows, mall manager Walt Sutton arrives with a new lease. When Fred's waiting list hits 200 tables, Walt demands a 50% rent increase, giving him three days to sign.

The notice names only Fred's unit, and the other fourth-floor tenants turn on him in their group chat, blaming him for the air-conditioning shutdown that will hit them all. Fred remembers the loans and favors he gave them, and he has already secured a spot at Avant Plaza.

As the air-conditioning dies and his kitchen climbs past 120 degrees, Fred weighs his staff's loyalty against the mall's ultimatum.

I've been running a grilled fish restaurant in Millennium Square for six years now. Each time the queue for my restaurant gets noticeably longer, the mall management comes knocking on my door to raise the rent.
