Story

The story

Five years into their marriage, Paige's husband Liam becomes obsessed with a proud college student, Jenny, who refuses his money and gifts. Though Liam once won Paige with ninety-nine love letters, he now humiliates her for Jenny's sake, and Paige burns one letter for every wound he inflicts. When all ninety-nine are ashes, she will leave him for good.

After Liam throws Paige's late mother's sapphire necklace into the sea and shoves her down the stairs so Jenny can move in as her caregiver, Paige must decide how much more she can endure. With the letters dwindling and her parents' company held over her head, her patience nears its end.

Opening excerpt

The girl was poor but proud. She rejected the black card Liam handed her, saying, "I won't be anyone's trophy bird in a gilded cage."

That single sentence made Liam obsessed.

He chased after this college girl, causing a scandal all over the city, completely forgetting he had a wife at home—a wife he had wooed with ninety-nine love letters before she finally agreed to marry him.

I didn't cry or make a scene. Instead, every time he hurt me for her sake, I burned one of those love letters.
