Story

The story

Eva Long earns a near-perfect SAT score, and in a televised interview she credits her sister Bethany Long and Bethany's ex, Charles Hicks, whose old rivalry and lingering banter made them the internet's favourite almost-couple. Julia, Charles's actual girlfriend, can only watch strangers cheer for a love story that isn't hers.

On her birthday, Charles and Bethany argue over a practice question until her candles burn down. When Bethany needs a study plan, they lock themselves in a hotel suite for three days while Julia has emergency appendix surgery alone. On the day she tries on wedding dresses, Charles leaves to take Eva on a trip, telling her to be understanding.

Julia cancels the wedding, returns the dress and calls off every vendor, having planned it all by herself for months. Bethany's posts keep flaunting Charles, and Julia finally stops pretending she isn't on her own.

Opening excerpt

When the SAT scores were released, the highest-scoring student in the state, Eva Long, had earned a 1590. During an interview with a local news station, a reporter asked her how she had done it.

Eva's lips curved into a knowing smile.

"My secret? My sister and her ex. They're both brilliant, and they have enough romantic drama between them to fill an entire TV series. They've been academic rivals since high school, always competing for the top grades. Even after they broke up, they still argued over who got to tutor me. Honestly, I owe my score to both of them."
