Story

The story

Before leaving to collect her wedding dress, Laurel asks Caleb whether it will rain. He checks his phone and says no, so she leaves her umbrella behind. By afternoon a downpour floods Chicago, and she returns soaked, the garment bag clutched to her chest. Caleb is in the shower; his phone shows a weather alert for Savannah, where his ex Delia once lived. Pinned in his weather app are three cities tied to Delia, and none of them is Chicago, the city where he and Laurel built six years together.

When Delia calls, stranded by a thunderstorm in Milwaukee, Caleb grabs the bespoke umbrella Laurel had made for him and drives three hours through the rain to fetch her, then tells Laurel to prepare the guest room. Delia notices the lily-of-the-valley embroidery on the ruined dress and mentions the wedding Caleb once promised her. Laurel had wanted camellias, her mother's flower, until Caleb insisted on lilies of the valley.

That night Laurel cancels the wedding, accepts a post in Iceland, and begins dismantling everything, while a fever takes hold and Caleb brings Delia home.

His phone lit up on the coffee table.

A weather alert flashed across the lock screen:
