Story

The story

Sierra's SAT score of 1540 falls ten points short of the 1550 her mother demanded for a post-exam trip. Her mother cancels the family payment plan, the hotel reservation, the flight booking and the ticket purchase, and empties Sierra's savings card, leaving Sierra and her friend Chloe stranded in a subway station far from home. When Sierra calls her father for help, he refuses, and her mother removes her from the family group chat after warning relatives not to send money.

Sierra learns her score became a bet between her mother and a coworker, Auntie Wang, whose daughter scored 1550. Humiliated and abandoned, Sierra has no way to pay for a room or a flight home. Then her cousin Rain sends $200 and a message that a test score does not define the future.

Opening excerpt

After my SAT scores came out, my friend and I were on the subway heading to our hotel.

When we tried to exit the station, my phone showed "insufficient funds."

Stuck at the turnstile, I called my mom: "Mom, why can't I pay for anything all of a sudden?"

A cold voice replied from the other end: "I cancelled the family plan."
