Story

The story

When a cruise ship strikes a hidden reef, panicked passengers shove Gwendolyn Clark into the sea. Her boyfriend, Captain Elijah Jensen, dives in — but swims past her to Kristen Langford, lifting her into the last lifeboat. He slaps Gwendolyn's hand away, telling her she can swim and to stop pretending. Her leg was broken against the hull, and every lifeboat is gone. She drowns, and her soul drifts to Elijah's boat.

Watching unseen, she sees him give Kristen mouth-to-mouth and promise her a lifetime together. When Staff Captain Oscar Baker reports one passenger missing and a signal in the water, Elijah insists everyone is aboard and dismisses it as a whale. At the hospital, her mother demands to know where her daughter is, and Elijah claims Gwendolyn boarded a lifeboat after him.

Loved for three years, she learns she was only ever a stand-in.
