Goodbye, Mr. Doctor

For 999 days, Chris sent Chloe a goodnight message through their CoupleStreak app, a ritual he built while chasing her. Then the streak breaks, and her 108 calls reach him at a hospital, where he is tending to Grace, his newly divorced ex-girlfriend. He calls Chloe's hurt petty.

On their 1000th day, Chloe arrives in his city, having resigned her teaching job to end their long distance. His mansion's fingerprint lock rejects her, and she waits in the freezing wind until he comes home at dawn, carrying Grace in the coat he once wrapped around Chloe. He asks her to be reasonable and keep quiet.

At breakfast he gives Grace the soup and pushes greasy bacon at Chloe, who is feverish and hoarse. She realizes she has become the unwanted extra in a movie of three people.
