Story
The story
On the day of her ectopic pregnancy surgery, Nora's husband Ethan promises to wait outside the operating room. But when she wakes in the recovery ward, he is gone — he is at Chloe's place, tending to her fever. When Nora calls, she hears Chloe's voice in the background. It is not the first time: whenever Nora needs Ethan, his childhood bestie invents an excuse to pull him away, and Chloe always comes first.
Nora phones her lawyer. Five years of marriage, and she is ready to end it. Ethan's FaceTime shows a hotel room, a bathrobe, and Chloe in matching pajamas. He calls her surgery minor and her anger paranoia, while Chloe plays the wronged, familyless woman. Nora gives him one last chance: come to her room tonight, or they divorce.
He does return — with spicy takeout meant for Chloe, who arrives wearing a ring matching Nora's engagement ring. As they fuss over the food, Nora stands despite the pain and slaps him.
Opening excerpt
But when I woke up in the recovery ward, he was nowhere to be found.
Then, my phone buzzed. It was a text from Ethan:
*Chloe has a fever. I’m at her place taking care of her. I’ll come to the hospital later.*
I dialed his number immediately. But the moment the call connected, a girl’s voice drifted through the receiver.
"Babe, can you hand me my underwear from the couch?"
I froze.
Every single time I needed my husband, his childhood bestie would find some ridiculous excuse to drag him away.
Sometimes it was a stomach ache. Sometimes it was a sprained ankle.
