Story

The story

A husband travels over a thousand eight hundred miles to find his wife, a professor at Harbor University. Before he can reach her, a stroller company calls to confirm a custom order—listing him as the father of a one-month-old child. The mother on file is his wife, Shiloh Zoeller.

At the address on the order, he finds her students celebrating her secret three-year romance with Easton Goodson, the child's father, and the baby she named Conrad—the name she and her husband once chose for their own future son. Years of caring for her bedridden father, Earl Zoeller, and living apart to help her career have been spent funding another family.

When Shiloh finally comes home, she offers no real explanation, only a request that he go easy on Easton and attend the young man's graduation ceremony.

Opening excerpt

I traveled over a thousand eight hundred miles to find my wife. She was a professor at Harbor University.

As soon as I arrived, I received a call.

“Hi, Mr. Jaques. We’re just following up on the stroller your wife custom-ordered from us. Have you been happy with it? If so, would you mind leaving us a quick positive review?”

I was stunned. We had lived apart for years and did not have a child together.

Still, I remained calm and double-checked.

“Are you sure I’m the one who ordered that stroller?”
