Story

The story

Susan is on a road trip with her boyfriend, Phillips, when she finds a girl named Penny already in the back seat. Phillips explains that Penny is heading the same way for the weekend and is just carpooling to save money. At the hotel, Penny follows them into their room, and Phillips announces they will all share it, with Penny on the sofa. Susan refuses, takes a room of her own, and when Phillips accuses her of overreacting, she ends the relationship.

Later, Susan spots Phillips and Penny dining at the Korean BBQ restaurant she had long wanted to visit, and she quietly eats alone at the next table. Back at the hotel, Penny appears at her door to apologize, insisting she and Phillips are only friends. As Penny speaks, Susan notices an unzipped bag holding a condom wrapper, and Penny hurriedly zips it shut.

Opening excerpt

Phillips smiled and explained, "This is Penny. She’s heading the same way for the weekend, so I thought we’d keep each other company."

Penny leaned forward and flashed me a sweet smile. "Don't worry, Susan, I won't get in your way. I'm just carpooling to save some cash."

I swallowed the lump in my throat and said nothing.
