Story

The story

Beckett Miller has always been the gold-standard brother to Sloane, guarding her since her first birthday and shielding her from their father's belt. But when a fight over a lake-house party pushes him to quote her private diary aloud, Sloane learns he has been snooping for years. Her revenge is a new journal with a flimsy heart-shaped lock, filled with a fabricated confession of forbidden obsession for her own brother.

Beckett reads it and unravels, dodging her, splashing cold water on his face, and demanding boundaries and space at the breakfast table. Then a couple in old-money couture arrives in luxury SUVs, throws their arms around him, and sobs that they have finally found their son.

If they are not actually related, Sloane wonders, was what she wrote a prank, or a prophecy?

Opening excerpt

My brother has always had the pathological habit of reading my diary.

To cure him of it once and for all, I decided to lean into his worst nightmare. I sat down and penned a masterpiece of pure fiction:

"I think I’m falling for my brother. This forbidden pull… it’s agony, but I’m addicted to the pain of loving him."

The result? My brother looked like he was having a literal stroke.
