Story

The story

Catherine leaves the bank with fifty thousand in cash for the New Year's holiday, then notices her passbook does not add up. When she returns to the teller, Brenda, to point out the mistake, Brenda flies into a rage, insisting all transactions are final once the customer leaves the counter and threatening her with the bank's rules. The security guard shoves Catherine out of the lobby.

Outside, Catherine opens her passbook and sees the truth: Brenda processed a deposit instead of a withdrawal, leaving her balance at 150,000. Since the bank's own plaque declares cash final once counted and accepted, Catherine deposits the cash at another bank and transfers the full balance into a third-party custody account.

Brenda's frantic calls and threats of police follow, and the next morning she arrives at Catherine's office with the branch manager and two officers, accusing Catherine of theft before a lobby full of colleagues. Catherine has only the bank's own rules on her side.

Opening excerpt

She instantly flew off the handle, pointing a finger right at my nose. "Don't you understand the policy? All transactions are final once you leave the counter.
