Story
The story
On the night the mortgage is finally paid off, Raina waits three hours with a candlelit dinner for her husband, Mark. He returns reeking of perfume and orders her out of the master bedroom: his first love, Serena, is back, diagnosed with severe depression, and will live with them. For seven years Raina, a senior actuary, poured every bonus into the house, working until she was hospitalized with a bleeding stomach.
Mark calls what he feels for her gratitude, not love, and moves Serena into their marital bed. When Raina objects, he slaps her and takes her five-thousand-dollar bonus for Serena's treatments, while his mother welcomes Serena as her true daughter-in-law. Raina refuses to surrender the home she bled for, and vows to see how shameless they can be.

With the paid-in-full notice in my hand, I sat by candlelight and waited for my husband, Mark, for three whole hours.
When he finally came home, he reeked of cheap, cloyingly sweet perfume.
There was no surprise, no hug.
He pulled out a chair and sat, his eyes darting away from mine, but his tone was firm.
“Raina, you need to move out of the master bedroom.”
The wine glass in my hand froze. I thought I’d misheard him.
“What did you say?”
He loosened his tie, his voice laced with irritation. “Serena’s back. She’s been diagnosed with severe depression, and she’s in a really bad state.”
