"Put that burden in the jump seat in the back corner. Don't let her embarrass us before the vote."
The top-floor boardroom of Sutton Tower offered a panoramic, floor-to-ceiling view of the Manhattan skyline.
Around the massive circular mahogany table sat the executive board, institutional investors, and senior managing directors. I was escorted in like a miniature prisoner by two security guards, who shoved me onto an auxiliary folding chair in the farthest corner of the room. In my lap sat an empty baby bottle they hadn't even bothered to fill.
The air in the room was suffocating. Every seasoned executive understood what this meeting was: an execution. The secondary branch was staging a hostile internal takeover.
Uncle Richard sat to the left of the empty Chairman’s seat, draped in an impeccably tailored navy suit, looking utterly sovereign. He leaned into his microphone, his voice smooth and measured.
"Members of the board, my father's failing health prevents him from continuing his executive duties. For the preservation of Sutton Enterprises, I move for an immediate operational restructuring. We will divest low-yield heritage assets and consolidate all strategic capital under our executive division. Furthermore, I propose that Savannah Sutton be formally ratified as Executive Vice President, assuming full proxy authority of the Chief Executive."
With a click, the massive projection screen lit up with complex flowcharts.
Anyone with half an eye for accounting could see what was happening: the "restructuring" was an intricate funneling system designed to siphon the Sutton family’s core wealth directly into offshore holding accounts controlled by Richard.
The directors looked at one another. Several brows furrowed; a few men stared down at their legal pads in silence. But after years of Richard cultivating backroom deals and leveraging debt over their heads, no one dared to raise their voice.
Savannah rose to her feet, moving gracefully to the center of the room. Dressed in a pristine ivory pantsuit, she wore the sharp, calculating smile of an elite predator.
"Many of you have watched me grow up. You know the dedication I have poured into this firm. For twenty years, I have lived and breathed corporate governance, understanding every subsidiary inside out."
Suddenly, she turned, pointing an accusing finger directly at me, huddled in the corner with my empty bottle.
"Now look at what remains of the primary branch! A toddler who can barely stay awake, who produces nothing but laundry and expenses! Allowing this deadweight to retain seniority is an insult to the founders of this corporation."
Her words were razor-sharp, calculated to sever whatever sentimental loyalty remained in the room.
"Today, we do not simply restructure capital. As the future steward of Sutton Enterprises, I will formally petition the family trust to strike her from our succession registry permanently!"
A manic fire burned in Savannah’s eyes. She could already feel the heavy gold signet ring on her finger; she could see the board bowing before her.
Richard nodded in satisfaction, tapping his fountain pen against the table. "If there are no objections, we will move directly to a voice and hand vote. All in favor of the restructuring and personnel appointment, raise your hands."
The loyalist directors raised their hands without hesitation.
The neutral members hesitated, exchanging uncomfortable glances, before slowly, reluctantly lifting their arms. The motion was an inch away from unanimous consent.
Savannah turned her head toward me, her gaze dripping with condescending triumph. It was the look of a conqueror delivering an execution order.
I let out a soft, tiny sigh.
Play the sleeping dog for too long, and the jackals really start to believe you have no teeth.
I set the empty bottle onto the auxiliary chair, hopped down, and smoothed the hem of my rumpled clothes.
Under the bewildered gaze of forty corporate titans, I casually made my way forward. I climbed up onto the towering leather Chairman’s chair, slapped a set of heavy, ribbon-bound legal deeds onto the polished mahogany, and held up one small, chubby hand.
"Veto."
"Have you lost your mind?" Savannah’s voice cracked into a shrill, mocking shriek. The boardroom was dead silent for two seconds before she burst into hysterical laughter, tears forming at the corners of her eyes. "Molly, did sitting in that dusty attic fry your tiny brain? A veto? Do you think this is a sandbox game?"
Richard snapped out of his shock, his face darkening to an ugly shade of plum. Feeling his authority insulted in front of the entire financial elite, he slammed both palms onto the table and stood up.
"Where is building security? Who let this brat into the executive suite? Escort her out of this building immediately!"
Two guards by the perimeter took a step forward.
Before their hands could touch my chair, the heavy double oak doors of the boardroom were thrown open with a resounding crack.
